Book Spotlight: LEGEND OF THE STORM SNEEZER by Kristiana Sfirlea @KristianasQuill #FridayFeature

Legend Seeker. Part-time Ghost Hunter. Time Traveler.

Thirteen-year-old Rose Skylar sneezed a magical storm cloud at birth, and it’s followed her around ever since. But when “Stormy” causes one too many public disasters, Rose is taken to Heartstone, an asylum for unstable magic. Its location? The heart of a haunted forest whose trees have mysteriously turned to stone.

They say the ghosts are bound to the woods … then why does Rose see them drifting outside the windows at night? And why is there a graveyard on the grounds filled with empty graves? Guided by her future selves via time traveling letters, Rose and Marek—best friend and potential figment of her imagination—must solve the mystery of the specters and the stone trees before the ghosts unleash a legendary enemy that will make their own spooks look like a couple of holey bed sheets and destroy Heartstone Asylum.

Letters from the future are piling up. Rose can’t save Heartstone herself. However, five of herselves, a magical storm cloud, and a guardian angel who might very well be imaginary? Now that’s a silver lining.

But will they find what killed the ghosts before what killed the ghosts finds them?

Excerpt:

Oh, the joys of being your own babysitter! Self-employment had never tasted so sweet. Yes, lack of pay was a slight disadvantage, but why would a girl be counting coins when she could be counting the steps from her house to the heart of a forbidden forest?

Of course, just because she was her own babysitter didn’t mean she was alone strolling the backwoods of her family’s estate. Rose was never alone, not with the little gray storm cloud following her wherever she went. Inside, outside, in the bathtub or in bed, there it was dripping raindrops like a runny nose. Lightning combed her curls till every strand was a live wire and the thunder…well, like most uncomfortable noises, thunder picked the absolute worst times to crack. Her storm cloud was, without any competition, the biggest nuisance in the domain of Chunter Woods.

     Gosh, she loved that thing.

“I’m a good babysitter, aren’t I?” Rose asked her storm cloud. Stormy considered this, fluttering in thought, and patted her head affirmatively. Her hair poofed like a kernel of popcorn. “Thought so.” She nodded in satisfaction.

She really was a good babysitter. Qualified in all babysitting necessities such as storytelling, how to open child safety locks, and—“Can we do that thing where you sock someone in the stomach when they’re choking?”

Stormy swooped, ramming between her ribs with the force of a fist. She belly-flopped on the ground, supplies spilling out of her rucksack. “Good,” she wheezed. “Good to know.”

About the Author:

Kristiana Sfirlea is a writer of MG fantasy involving time travel and things that go bump in the night.

As an author, Kristiana knows what it means to get in character. She spent five years volunteering as a historical reenactor and trying her best not to catch her skirts on fire as a colonial girl from the 1700s (leading cause of death at the time next to childbirth). Working at a haunted house attraction, she played a jumping werewolf statue, a goblin in a two-way mirror, and a wall-scratcher — so if she’s standing very still, growling, checking her reflection, or filing her nails on your wall, be alarmed. Those are hard habits to break.

A proud homeschool graduate, Kristiana credits much of her development as a writer to her schooling experience, which also helped her combat a learning disability, dyslexia, and clear the path for her love of reading. Inspired by a local oddity, the Sweetreads Bookmobile, Kristiana dreams of the day she can run her own mobile bookstore. Or haunted house attraction. Or both. Look out, world — here comes a haunted bookmobile! (And this is precisely why writers should never become Uber drivers.) She loves Jesus, her family, and imaginary life with her characters.

Preparing For Summer

READY, SET, JUMP INTO SUMMER: C*U*R*R*E*N*T*L*Y BLOG HOP

Summertime is my most favorite season of the year. To me, it means travel season – warm weather, craft shows, sunscreen, time in the pool, multiple book signing appearances, vacations, etc.

Normally I blog on a regular basis, however, because I have neglected this blog the last couple of months due to multiple writing projects, I wanted to do something different and briefly talk about what I’ve been up to, reading, writing about, listening to and anticipating. Then, visit the #Gr8Blogs at the end of this post for even more inspiration and smiles.

What I’ve Been Up To:

Lots of exciting things have been going on lately. First, I officially handed in my manuscript to my publisher for the next book in The Rite of Wands series. It is titled The Rite of Abnegation. Though there is no official release date yet, I predict it will be released towards Fall of 2020.

And second, earlier this year, I also joined a podcast called The Legend of the Traveling TARDIS Radio Show. Check out & SUBSCRIBE to the newest and the best Doctor WHO radio show. A new episode every Saturday on Krypton Radio and you can listen and download the episodes at:

Currently Reading:

I had always been under the impression the Star Trek novels were just novelized versions of each of the episodes of the show. Instead, I most recently discovered that while some may, most contain stories that were never seen on television. Seriously, where have I been?

Currently I’m reading The Murdered Sun by Christie Golden as part of the Star Trek Voyager novelizations:

When sensors indicate a possible wormhole nearby, Captain Janeway is eager to investigate, hoping to find a shortcut back to Federation space. Instead, she discovers a star system being systematically pillaged by the warlike Akerians. Janeway has no desire to get caught up in someone else’s war, but in order to the check on the possibilities offered by the wormhole — and to save the innocent people of Veruna Four — VoyagerTM has no choice but to challenge the Akerians.

Currently Writing:

With the 25th anniversary of Star Trek Voyager coming up next year, I’m currently working on a science fiction short story collection, containing stories all written by me, that will be similar to a mesh of Star Trek Voyager and Doctor Who. One of the featured stories, I’m also planning on submitting for possible inclusion in a science fiction/fantasy anthology, that, if accepted, will be released in September 2019.

Currently Listening To:

I have been anxiously awaiting the release of this audiobook, The Lives of Captain Jack: Volume 2, from Big Finish Productions ever since it was first announced. I absolutely HAD to know how our favorite Captain Jack Harkness would end up in the 6th Doctor’s clothing and would become the Doctor in Piece of Mind written by James Goss.

It is a brilliant, clever story, though not 100% without flaws. I’ll discuss more about this in an upcoming podcast episode of The Legend of the Traveling TARDIS Radio Show.

What I’m Thinking About:

This past weekend, I did a book signing at the largest Doctor Who store and museum in the United States called Who North America. It’s located in Camby, Indiana, just south west of Indianapolis.

I had the pleasure of sitting in the designated area for official Doctor Who writers. There, I got to be part of both worlds – getting to meet new readers of The Rite of Wands and talking exclusively about Doctor Who!

The last week of October, they will be having another wonderful Doctor Who event called Doctoberfest! They will have a costume contest, Doctor Who exclusive vendors, pumpkin carving, and much much more!

You name it, this store/museum has it, including an original designed Cyberman! If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, you live in the US, and have never been there before, you have GOT to check it out.

Seeing In My Camera Lens:

If you may love dragons as much as I do, you may be able to see the dragon that I swear formed in this set of clouds when I captured this photograph.

Book Spotlight: Alpha Tales 2014 by @wesley_britton #scifi #newrelease

Alien Vision presents a collection of short stories and sketches from the Beta-Earth Chronicles by Wesley Britton.

Alpha Tales 2044, opens on Beta-Earth when two genetically-enhanced mutants are forced to recover a stolen secret, the cure to the ancient Plague-With-No-Name that defined a planet for millennia.

Then we jump across the multi-verse to our earth, Alpha-Earth, where police Captain Mary Carpenter infiltrates a gang of White Supremacists who want to purify Texas after decades of climate change and weaponized plagues.

Still on Alpha, we leap ahead in time to 40years in the future where Mary Carpenter joins up with four aliens, two from Beta-Earth, two from Sera-pin-Earth. All four share the same father, The Blind Alien from Alpha-Earth. They’ve traveled across the multi-verse to tell us about their worlds.

But Alphans, scarred by the devastation’s to our world, are unhappy about learning about very different cultures from anything we’ve ever known and especially hearing about multiple deities. So the alien band are forced to go on the run and take sanctuary in a First Nation domed city in British Columbia.

But their sanctuary doesn’t last long. Forced to travel further into the Canadian wilderness, the family encounters a pair of Sasquatch who change everything for them. They learn about the many definitions of what it means to be human.

Alpha Tales 2044, is a collection of stories that are part sci-fi, part murder mysteries, part horror, and part social commentary. But completely full of the unexpected, surprises, and tales, unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

EXCERPT: From Last Night Of The Colective

I vividly remember the afternoon when Jrin Rol, the second-in-command of our security unit, and I stepped onto the ground floor of the Hotel Domino in the new city called Monte Carlo. The hotel was an entertainment center named after yet another Alpha game Malcolm Renbourn had brought to our planet. It should have been named Hotel Backgammon for all the pointed spikes of alternating colors on the floors and walls.

On this day, I was listening to Jrin’s wistful hopes for an extended leave from service so she could deepen her studies in linguistic morphologies, geographic spatial patterns, and other analytical investigative techniques that would make her far more than a skilled expert in stealth and counter-espionage operations. I was becoming more and more impressed with what I heard as we walked into the dining hall.

Then, my blood chilled. In one moment, I felt as if I’d drank a bath shell-sized cocktail of adrenaline and dread. Sitting alone at a table in the corner was First Helprim Kiem Holenris from ital, the supreme head of the Munchen Collective. The last I’d seen of this seeming old crone had been in my offices in Bercumel. On that day, Holendris had let me know my life was on the line if I continued my then-pointless, personal war with my bond-family. For, like her, my genetically-enhanced mutations had come at a cost. The little pills the Collective now provided me slowed the metabolic rushing of time that aged such as us much faster than our years. If I wanted to live a healthy and beautiful life and for a good long time, I needed the pills only the Collective could provide me.

Holendris looked like a woman who’d seen four generations of descendants from her womb. But she was merely the age of my own mother. Like me, her appearance concealed a body of extraordinary gifts. Unlike me, she had started her pill regimen much later in her life than I had, hence her aged face and deceptively marked skin. On this day, while her lips were twisted in an almost skullish smile, her eyes sent a clear message to me across the wide hall of tables and happy noises.

“Child,” they wordlessly told me, “bring your sun-drenched bronze skin and bright, blonde hair over here to me. You must come to me now. A matter of dire importance awaits you. Awaits us.”

I looked to Jrin, who understood my own silent signal. We slowly made our way to the Helprim’s round, polished white table where Kiem studied our movements with practiced eyes. She nodded as we came close and indicated two chairs.

“Sit, little kitty,” she cooed. “Sit, Jrin Rol of the Mask-Painters.”

Wordlessly, we took our places as serving hands quickly brought us trays of beverages. Kiem waited until the hands departed and took a sip of her own red pravine, then said softly, “Thank you for your quick compliance, as what I am here to discuss requires some delicacy.”

About the Author

Immerse yourself in an extraordinary universe revealed by the most original storytelling you’ll ever experience. “Science fiction yes, but so much more.”

Besides his 33 years in the classroom, Dr. Wesley Britton considers his Beta-Earth Chronicles the most important work he’s ever done. “I suppose an author profile is intended to be a good little biography,” Britton says, “but the best way to know who I am is to read my novels.”

Still, a few things you might like to know about Wes include the fact he’s the author of four non-fiction books on espionage in the media, most notably The Encyclopedia of TV Spies (2009). Beginning in 1983, he was a widely published poet, article writer for a number of encyclopedias, and was a noted scholar of American literature. Since those days, for sites like BlogCritics.org and BookPleasures.com, Britton wrote over 500 music, book, and movie reviews. For seven years, he was co-host of online radio’s Dave White Presents for which he contributed celebrity interviews with musicians, authors, actors, and entertainment insiders.

Starting in fall 2015, his science fiction series, The Beta-Earth Chronicles, debuted with The Blind Alien. Throughout 2016, four sequels followed including The Blood of Balnakin, When War Returns, A Throne for an Alien, and The Third Earth. Return to Alpha was the sixth volume of this multi-planetary epic.

Britton earned his doctorate in American Literature at the University of North Texas in 1990. He taught English at Harrisburg Area Community College until his retirement in 2016. He serves on the Board of Directors for Vision Resources of Central Pennsylvania.
