Book Spotlight: The Rite of Wands (Special Hardbound Edition)

FB_Banner_Rite_of_Wands_Mackenzie_Hardcover

One of the most frequent questions I am asked as an author is what inspired me to write The Rite of Wands. I have always found that question interesting because when you think about it, inspiration is different for everyone. It may be a memory, a character from a book, song lyrics, a political speech, a TV series, or even an actor’s performance. Pure imagination is in all of us—we only need to discover it, and sometimes storytelling helps. Inspiration can come to us in any shape or form; you never know what or who may inspire you.

Mackenzie Flohr and BHC Press are pleased to announce the upcoming release of The Rite of Wands in hardcover!

In this special edition of the first book in the award winning young adult series, The Rite of Wands, releasing November 11, 2017, readers will be enchanted by a brand new short-story never before published!

One boy…one Rite… And a world of deadly secrets that could change the course of history—forever

And so begins the tale of Mierta McKinnon. When a horrible fate reveals itself during template-1-12172901503297868-largehisRite of Wands ceremony, he must find a way to change not only his destiny but also the land of Iverna’s.

Forbidden from revealing the future he foresees to anyone, he is granted a wand and his magical powers, but still must master the realm of magic in order to save himself and those he loves.

But Mierta is not the only one with secrets…especially when it’s impossible to know who to trust.

Excerpt:

“For God’s sake, get out of the road!” he heard a voice shout from the direction of the out of control carriage. “Hail, Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee…”

Mortain stared forward, frozen, unable to move. Life at that very moment seemed to slow to a near standstill. He could hear his heart beating in his ears as the horse and carriage barrelled down upon him. His mind concluded that this was how his life was going to end, rather than the way his Rite of Wands had dictated. There was nothing more tragic than being unable to be who he was.

         “Vorbíllion!”

Mortain was abruptly lifted off the ground and thrown into a nearby water trough. As he sat up, feeling the water soak through his robe and tunic, he watched a beautiful woman wearing her long black hair in a twist to the side substitute herself in the place he had been previously standing.

She gazed over to Mortain with annoyance, her green eyes shifting into what appeared to be snake eyes as she reached out a bare hand towards the carriage and shouted, “Concye halímo!”

The horse snorted and quickly came to a halt.

Bio:

DKQIJ2hUQAAc9IJ.jpg-largeMackenzie Flohr is the author of the popular young adult fantasy series The Rite of Wands, which has caught the attention of Doctor Who and Harry Potter fans worldwide. Readers agree that Mackenzie has crafted a robust tale of secrets, mystery, and uncertain destiny that rivals the works of Tolkien, Lewis, and Rowling.

Mackenzie grew up in Cleveland, OH, chasing leprechauns and rainbows and dreaming of angels. Her parents nurtured a love of fantasy and make-believe by introducing her at a very young age to the artistic and cultural opportunities that the city had to offer. Yet, it wasn’t until she was on a trip to Indiana, viewing a Lord of the Rings exhibit, that the innermost desire of her heart became clear to her.

Fans have become enchanted by Mierta McKinnon, describing him as an innocent, rambunctious, trouble-seeking, realistic, and believable character whom has quickly become a fan favorite. The Rite of Wands follows the young warlock as he seeks to fulfill his destiny and cure the land of Iverna of a horrendous disease called The Shreya. Readers will find themselves immersed into his story and feel like they are a part of his journey.

EXCLUSIVE CONTENT
tposcover

Eden’s had a long academic rivalry with Ash Gupta, a guy who seems to have everything going exactly as he wants. He’s admired by their classmates and making the kind of grades that his wealthy, immigrant parents expect. Eden knows that Ash only sees she is an obstacle– the girl from the wrong side of the tracks who stands in his path to being valedictorian.

Eden’s perfect GPA should be enough to get her a free ride to college — and an exit from her trailer-park existence for good. The last thing she needs is another argument with Ash, who wants a prized scholarship for his own selfish reasons. Or so she thinks. . .

When they end up working together on a class project, Eden discovers that they have more in common than either of them could have imagined. They’re both in pursuit of a dream — but what does the future hold for two passionate souls from totally different worlds?

Here are the main cast members from The Possibility of Somewhere—and why I chose their names.

Ash – In high school, my daughter attended a magnet school, and one of her best friends was Indian-American. So I asked them to pick the perfect name for a gorgeous Indian-American guy, and they chose Ash.

Eden – Eden is the name of a small town in a beautiful part of North Carolina.  I somehow knew that the heroine’s bio mom would want to name her children after places—so the heroine became Eden, and her brother is Boone (a college town in the NC mountains.)

Mundy – Eden’s best friend is Mundy, which is short for Rosamund. Mundy’s mother picked the name from the heroine of The Sea Hawk by Rafael Sabatini. I’ve never read the book, so I have no idea how I came up with that.

Marnie – One of my favorite fictional mothers is Marmee from Little Women. I changed the name a little, and Eden’s amazing stepmother became Marnie.  Eden tells Mundy that the name “Marnie” is a cross between “Mommy” and “Marlene.” That was a surprise to me!

Kurt and Marta – I was half-watching The Sound of Music when I started writing the two kids that Eden babysits. So, they’re named after the movie’s Von Trapp children.

Raj – I have a day job as a software engineer, and my first developer/mentor was Raj. He invited me to his wedding celebration, and I invited him to mine. He’s just a great man, so I wanted to honor him in this small way.

Peyton – Eden and Ash compete for the same college scholarship, The Peyton. I named the scholarship after Peyton Manning.

Norah and Charlie – For any book or series that I write, there will always be two characters with the names Norah and Charlie. The reason is bittersweet. It’s a memorial to two adorable children that we lost too soon. Charlie was my nephew, who died when he was 4. Norah was a dear friend’s daughter. She passed away at age 6.  We have not forgotten.

To learn more, check out Julia’s February release, Fade To Us. Or visit her website for an excerpt and a bonus scene (from Ash’s POV) for The Possibility of Somewhere.

And don’t forget to enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of books by me, Julia, and more! To enter, you need to know that my favorite number is 11. Add up all the favorite numbers of the authors on the purple team and you’ll have all the secret code to enter for the grand prize!
CONTINUE THE HUNT

To keep going on your quest for the hunt, you need to check out the next author, J. C. Welker! Click here to continue the journey!

Also, PS: I’ll be releasing an anthology later this month and a special hardcover edition of the YA Fantasy, The Rite of Wands, with bonus content, in November–so be sure to check back here for more info on that.
